Legislative Update #11
I’m typing this as I listen to the Senators who are not returning next year give their farewell speeches. The following Senators are leaving due to term limits:
John Arch – District 14 – Papillion
Tom Brandt – District 32 – Plymouth
Machaela Cavanaugh - District 6 – Omaha
Rob Clements – District 2 – Elmwood
Wendy DeBoer – District 10 – Omaha
Myron Dorn – District 30 – Adams
Ben Hansen – District 16 – Blair
Megan Hunt – District 8 – Omaha
Mike Moser – District 22 – Columbus
Dave Murman – District 38 – Glenville
The following Senators are not seeking re-election:
Jane Raybould – District 28 – Lincoln
Fred Meyer – District 41 – St Paul
Christy Armendariz – District 18 – Bennington
The Governor returned 5 bills today with his veto and 2 bills without his signature. The 5 bills vetoed were LBs 839, 878, 929, 1029, and 1256. Override attempts were made on 4 of them but failed. It takes 30 votes to override the Governor’s veto, and none of them were successful. He also returned LB1237 and LB1237A to the Unicameral without his signature. Those 2 bills become law notwithstanding today. LB1237 allows the Legislature and the State Patrol to develop stronger security protocols within the Capitol building and disallow certain weapons to be brought into the building.
Intern Tess and I will have wrap-ups for you in the weeks to come, but I’ve been invited to Bison Witches for a snack and a drink…and I’ll accept both :).
It’s been a very very very busy session and while we didn’t accomplish all we set out to do this year, I remain hopeful and grateful for the trust you have all put in me to represent you in this great Capitol city of Nebraska. I look very forward to seeing you all very soon.
Peace OUT!
Happy Sine Die
