Legislative Update #13

Today is Day 88 of a maximum 90-Day Session. Most of this past week has been spent dealing with bills on Select File and Final Reading. There are 4 bills left on Final Reading that need to wait the constitutionally required layover day (today) before being sent to the Governor on Monday. As I type this, there hasn’t been a promise, but all signs point to adjournment on Monday afternoon. SINE DIE. That’s my favorite Latin phrase. It means ‘without day’, meaning Elvis is leaving the building with no assumed time to return. They will vote on the last few bills, take up any vetoes that the Governor sends their way over the weekend (there are maybe 60 bills on the Governor’s Desk from this week), likely take up a couple of resolutions that need debated due to time restraints, and then make some procedural motions and send everyone packing. (sigh of relief)

Party #1 was last night, and a good time was had by all. There are 2 end-of-year parties, typically, here in the Star City, 1 is the Traditional Sine Die Party and is held at the Country Club of Lincoln with everyone still in their business attire. The 2nd is next Monday, and it’s put on by the Legislative Staff and is full of skits and parodies and has a secret-till-the-day host who does a monologue. The whole show is built like SNL and can get fairly racy on occasion. If you did something stupid this year and it made the news, you better be prepared to get poked at! This is always one of my favorite things to see every year. It’s a great way to start the summer vacation. Also usually I end up in a skit or video somewhere….

Enjoy your weekend everyone!
