Lincoln People's City Mission

The hygiene component of the People's City mission (PCM) is up and running and we have already seen over one dozen patients. There is now a separate hygiene cabinet to hold our own supplies and instruments that the Mission has provided. We even have an ultrasonic now and are hoping for another soon. They are crucial!

A protocol guide is provided to help everyone on their first visit. It helps to become familiar with where everything is located. The protocol is provided to insure a consistent and routine experience for each hygienist and patient. Please consider volunteering your talents. The need is huge and the rewards are even larger! You can volunteer as much or as little as you want. Start the volunteer process by getting the paper work started. Any questions contact Cynthia Carlson at crcdh@msn.com or Ashley Gerlach, the Medical Clinic Volunteer Coordinator, at agerlach@peoplescitymission.org.You will be so glad you reached out to help.

ADHA Institute for Oral Health is offering raffle

The ADHA Institute for Oral Health is offering raffle tickets in an effort to raise revenue to help fund vital Institute programs. This year all proceeds from the raffle will go towards the Institute Scholarship Program. Nebraska students have taken advantage of these scholarships for many years. The drawing will take place at the 2010 Annual Session. There will be three cash prizes awarded and you do not need to be present to win.

Each ticket is $2.00. They are available at your local component meetings, or you can send checks made payable to Institute for Oral Health to me at Tammy Dugan, 4059 Indianhead Drive, Grand Island, NE 68803 and I will send you back the ticket stubs.

Thank you for supporting Institute Programs and the profession of dental hygiene.

You can contact me with any questions at tammydugan@yahoo.com or 308-384-4694.

PNDHA

Greetings from the Panhandle Component Officers,

The Panhandle Component was excited to have a great continuing education course in November titled “H1N1 Virus and Stroke Awareness for the Dental Hygienist” which was presented by Shannon Vanderheiden, BS, BSN, Kira Paben, RDH, & Julie Hesseltine, RN. These ladies were amazing and did a great job covering information that all health care providers need to be aware of, so THANK YOU once again for your contribution to our component!

We are currently working on finalizing plans for our spring meeting, which we plan to hold at the end of March or April. Please look for further information regarding the topic, speaker(s), and locations of our next meeting on the NDHA website. We will post this information as soon as possible.

Also we want to THANK our Membership Chair, Kris Arrants, for all the new ideas and enthusiasm she brings to the component! Kris designed “memo pads” and a great logo for the Panhandle component, which participants received at the November continuing education course. It was a clever idea and a great way to show the Panhandle hygienists the support from their local hygiene component. You are amazing Kris. THANKS!!!

We continue to be excited about the Panhandle Component and are always looking for ways to make our association fit the needs of its members! The Panhandle Component will continue to strive to BRING IT TO YOU!

Save the Date! On September 18th, 2010 Esther Wilkins will be in Omaha giving a continuing education course. Find out more at nedha.org under the Continuing Education tab!

ODHA has had the wonderful opportunity to have three talented practicing hygienists speak at our meetings these past few months. I wanted to thank Caren Barnes, Gwen Hlava, and Sherry Burns for their exceptional continuing education courses. These hygienists shared from their experience and expertise giving us current and invaluable information. During the past few meetings, Annette Byman has served in the role of President while I was on maternity leave. I greatly appreciate all of Annette's time and efforts in making this a successful year. Also Donna Eckman held our Vala's Pumpkin Patch Community Service Outreach. ODHA thanks her for her time and donations to making Omaha more aware of our local component and what hygienists offer our community. Furthermore, our component would like to invite anyone who is interested in serving on our board to contact me via email if interested (kimmccoyrdh@gmail.com).Volunteering for your local component is a wonderful way to connect with your colleagues and develop your leadership skills. All of our board members would agree that it is a great experience. Also make sure to check NDHA's website www.nedha.org for any updates.  We would not want you to miss a single opportunity our component has to offer.

UNMC Student Associations

West Division

Just as quickly as 2010 has rolled in, this semester has gotten off to an exciting start. On January 12, 2010 we had the pleasure of listening to Ann Guignon speak during a lunch and learn. It was great to have a reminder about correct ergonomics and many other important bits of information to incorporate into our future career. The West Division seniors also enjoyed the annual trip to the Rocky Mountain Dental Convention and attended an advanced instrumentation course presented by Anna Pattison. We have been fortunate to learn from these two dental hygiene icons. We also met the Lincoln students and faculty at the conference to spend time with each other.

The seniors are not the only ones who get to travel and have interesting experiences this semester. The juniors are going to the Pine Ridge Reservation to place sealants on elementary children in a school setting. Additional sealant programs will be provided during the spring term at Banner County and Minatare Elementary Schools. The junior hygiene students will also be traveling to Lincoln in February to attend Dental Day XVII.

The seniors continue to be busy screening patients for Mock Boards, CRDTS, and studying for National Boards. We look forward to graduation with excitement and anxiously anticipate beginning our new careers.

Lincoln

With the beginning of the Spring semester, the Dental Hygiene students at UNMC are keeping busy. The senior students attended the Rocky Mountain Dental Convention held January 21-23, 2010 in Denver, Colorado. Not only were the exhibits full of new information, we learned a lot attending seminars on advanced periodontal instrumentation, oral pathology, forensic dentistry, and stress busting.  This convention was an especially nice opportunity to spend time with West Division classmates and faculty.

The junior students are seeing their first patients in clinic and preparing for three sealant programs in Omaha this spring. Working with UNMC Pediatric residents, they will apply sealants and fluoride varnish on 2nd, 3rd, and 6th grade students at Kellom Elementary, Miller Park Elementary, and Liberty Elementary schools in Omaha.

For their Community Dental Health Project, the senior dental hygiene students will provide screenings, sealants, and fluoride varnish for 2nd and 3rd grade students in three Lincoln elementary schools (Elliot, McPhee, and Everett).

Dental Day XVII will be held February 5, 2010 at the College of Dentistry. Dental hygiene students will be providing prophies, sealants, and fluoride varnishes to elementary children from ten communities (Columbus, Lexington, West Point, Beemer, Norfolk, Madison, Hastings, Crete, Loup City, and Milford).

UNMC senior dental hygiene students and faculty pose with Anna Pattison, RDH, MS, who lectured about advanced Periodontal Instrumentation at the Rocky Mountain Dental Convention in Denver, Colorado.
