Course Description
Speaker: Bryon Ueckert, American Heart Association Instructor
This CPR renewal course will cover adult, child and infant
CPR techniques. Each participant must present their current CPR card in order to
take this course. Registration begins at 6:00 pm. Course will begin at 6:30 and
will end at varying times, depending on when each person fulfills the
requirements. No food or beverages will be provided these evenings. You are
welcome to bring a non-alcoholic beverage of your choice. Payment must be
received in advance of the course. Registration is limited to 32 participants
per class.
October 11, 2010 – An Overview of Nutritional/Herbal Effect on
Teeth, Oral Tissue & Healing
Speaker: Nicholas Schnell, RD, CH, RH – Mr. Schnell is a nutritionist, registered dietician, licensed medical nutrition therapist, clinical herbalist and registered herbalist in the state of Nebraska. His training includes a Bachelor of Arts – Psychology from UNO, Dietetics/Nutrition from UNL, Graduate School and Internship in Nutrition/Dietetics from Texas State University, Herbology Professional Herbalist Program from Santa Cruz, California and Wu Dang Qi G ong Wai Qi liao Fa Certification (External Chi Healing) from Master Yun Xiang Tseng. He is the Founder, Director and Clinical Herbalist of Four Winds Healing Center and Herb Dispensary located in Omaha, NE. He is a faculty instructor with Four Winds Center for Herbal Studies, Ancient Wisdom College of Healing Arts and the Universal College of Healing Arts.
Course Description: At the conclusion of the program, the
participant will be able to 1) Identify the vitamin and mineral deficiencies
that lead to dental caries; 2) Identify the role of vitamins and minerals in
enamel remineralization; 3) Explain the role of green tea and other medicinal
herbs in tooth decay and tooth remineralization; 4) Identify specific medicinal
herbs that promote the attachment of the tooth to alveolar bone; 5) Discuss
herbal demulcents that prevent the formation of and/or promote the healing of
oral ulcerations and lesions; 6) Identify herbal astringents that are of
importance to oral mucosa; 7) Identify the role of green tea and polyphenols to
the prevention of gingivitis; 8) Identify the role of grape seed extract and
OPC’s to the prevention of gingivitis; 9) Identify the oral mucosal benefits of
blueberries and anthocyanadins; 10) Explain the effects of citrus fruit and
bioflavanoids on gingival health; 11) Identify other antioxidants and medicinal
plants that contribute to the health of the gingiva; and 12) Describe the
correlation between Coenzyme Q10 and gingival health.
November 1, 2010 – Periodontal & Medical Considerations in Implant Therapy
Speaker: Dr. Melissa Lang, DDS, MS. Dr. Lang obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Pittsburg State University and received her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from UNMC College of Dentistry. In 2007, she received a Certificate in Periodontics and a Master’s of Science in oral biology from UNMC College of Dentistry. While at UNMC, she conducted research in periodontal regeneration using simvastatin, a cholesterol-lowering drug that stimulates bone growth. Dr. Lang maintains a private practice in Omaha, NE and serves as the course director of Sophomore Periodontology at Creighton University School of Dentistry where she also teaches in the Periodontics and Implant clinics. Dr. Lang is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Association, the Nebraska Dental Association, the Omaha District Dental Socity, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Dental Society and the President of the Nebraska Society of Periodontology.
Course Objectives: 1) To discuss systemic and periodontal
diseases of concern when considering implant therapy for a patient; 2) Discuss
the impact of systemic and periodontal diseases on implant success; 3) Review
key differences in periodontal parameters (probing depth, attachment apparatus)
between dental implants and natural teeth; and 4) Discuss appropriate implant
maintenance procedures.
January 27, 2011 – Salivary Diagnostics: Bringing Clinical Lab Testing to Dentistry
Speaker: Victoria Richards, BS, RDH. Ms. Richards has over 25 years of experience in clinical dental hygiene in private practice with an emphasis of the incorporation of diagnostic testing in non-surgical perio treatment therapies and risk assessment. She received her AS from Meherry Medical College in Nashville, TN and completed her BSDH from East Tennessee State University. She has held offices on the local and state level of her professional organization including the 2006-07 President of the Tennessee DHA and is currently District VI Trustee for the ADHA. Victoria is currently the Director of Education for OralDNA labs.
Course Description: The role of dental professionals in total health is more important than ever. Understanding salivary diagnostics and molecular testing in the diagnosis, treatment and maintenance of HPV and periodontal infections is the “new standard of care” in soft tissue management and in preventing oral cancer. Clinical lab tests are essential tools and used routinely in medical models to provide important diagnostic information to health care providers. Now, clinical laboratory testing is available for dental professionals. This course is designed to educate you on the importance of implementing certified clinical laboratory testing for Oral Medicine. At the conclusion of the course, each participant will be able to: 1) Understand the role of HPV and oral cancer; 2) Identify SRP-Resistant Micro-organisms and their complexes; 3) Understand clinical laboratory importance in the dental community; 4) Discover etiology through pathology; and 5) Incorporate dental codes for molecular testing on periodontal pathogens into treatment plans.
February 17, 2011 – Domestic Violence: Reporting Adult and Child Abuse
Speaker: Teena Beehner, RDH, MS. Ms. Beehner received her BS degree in Dental Hygiene from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. In 2000, she received her Master of Science in Counseling from Creighton University. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor at Creighton University Medical Center, School of Dentistry and practices clinical dental hygiene part-time for Dr. Bruce Mowat. She serves as a dental hygiene examiner for the Central Regional Dental Testing Service. She is a member of the Central Regional Dental Testing Services, ADEA, Special Care Dentistry, ADHA, NDHA, ODHA and American Counseling Association. She served as NDHA President in 2006 and is very involved in various community organizations.
Course Description: This course if for all dental professionals and will provide participants with up-to-date information regarding: 1) Recognizing signs of domestic violence in adults & children; 2) How to offer support and resources in the community; and 3) Understanding what your responsibility as a health care provider is in reporting domestic violence.
